(outlink) Geek Overcomes Social Anxiety By Turning Life into RPG

By way of Brian:
Geek Overcomes Social Anxiety By Turning Life into RPG.

Interesting idea. It's an application of one of my favourite tricks: Anything that makes progress measurable will make you much more likely to progress. That's one of the reasons I like juggling - just count how many throws you can do!

  • wth, is this for real...

I can imagine something like this happening but the article was really 'jokish'.

Anyway, basing your real life on an RPG (which is a game which is (kind of) based on real life) is kind of weird. It's like... you base your life on something that's based on life...

That guy's out of touch with reality, man. But hey, if it works for him, fine :)

  • Yeah, it's a psychedelic idea. If I were to construct something based on this, I would do it quite a bit differently.

What I liked about this was the use of points to make an automated reward system, with grading of different challenges. I think it would be possible to do something based on that, maybe set up a kind of web site with a collection of missions etc - helping guys get into this more easily.

  • Have you heard any more on this? Someone I know is thinking of creating a similar system. I'm gonna run some searches to see if this system was a success or not.

    Thanks,

  • I've not heard anything more about this in particular. However, I've also been doing some work and research in the area, and may give you something interesting soon. (Hit me up on IRC if you want details; I'm on linknet at the moment.)
